Chiropractic Adjustment

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a gentle and effective technique that is used by many chiropractors that provides mobilizations in the spine and other joints. The adjustment has been studied to alleviate the pressure that is being pressed on muscles, joints, nerves, tendons, and ligaments. Current research has supported that chiropractic adjustments are moderately effective for acute low back pain, neck pain, and headaches or migraines.

Can a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

The adjustment helps to improve mobility through the spine. Occasionally, a person might experience some soreness after their first treatment. This may be related to stretching of the tight muscles that are protecting an injured area. The majority of people do not experience any soreness. At Hometown Spine & Sport, we specialize in gentle and light treatments in order to avoid any post-treatment soreness. Our main goal is to ensure that your comfort and concerns are addressed.

What is the “popping” or “cracking” sound heard during the adjustment?

When the spine is stretched out or mobilized, a “cracking” sound may be heard. That sound is nothing more than stretching a specific joint in the spine. The actual sound heard during an adjustment is the release of gaseous material in each joint. The same sound could be heard if someone was to crack their knuckles. Bones are not being cracked or moved but rather being stretched out to the point that takes the pressure off of the nerves, joints, and muscles.

A 2013 study from Spine, a prestigious medical journal, found that Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy (CMT) in conjunction with standard medical care offers a significant advantage for decreasing pain and improving physical functioning when compared with only standard care. Chiropractic adjustments are light, gentle and directed towards a specific segment of the spine. Many people report moderate to significant relief after just one adjustment.
